There are two things which come to mind when I think of the Christmas stockings of my youth – little bits of tat that no one really wanted, which would get lost within hours (or end up in someone’s shoe) and sweeties that would be gobbled up within minutes, leaving us all more hyper than a Duracell bunny. All would be contained in unnecessary amounts of plastic packaging, discarded by lunchtime, and quickly forgotten about until the process repeated itself the following year.
This week I made it my personal mission to come up with a more eco-friendly Christmas stocking which would entertain well beyond Christmas day. Every gift was carefully selected with fun, learning (and longevity) in mind!
Read on for my top 12 suggestions for stocking fillers fit for a superhero…
1. Oglee Poglee Craft Set (£5 per bag)
These little craft sets are absolutely magical, and all their contents are uniquely handcrafted and designed. These were originally designed to be party bag fillers, which makes them the perfect, compact size to be popped in a stocking. I absolutely love the little stickers, and the creativity behind the concept. On top of that, the contents of each package vary from bag to bag and each individual bag carries endless possibilities for crafty creations…
2. Jellycat Bashful plushie (£12-17.50)
Who doesn’t love a furry little friend? Jellycat has a huge variety of super soft companions to meet every child’s tastes. In addition to the above they stock lions, puppies, bunnies… (and even unicorns!).
3. Petit Collage Busy-bunny (£20.00)
Or, for a younger child you could check out this adorable, quirky alternative – featuring a wooden teether & 100% recycled/organic materials. It looks like a little quilt. I love it.
4. LUSH Bath-jelly (£8.95)
Honestly, is there any kid who doesn’t love slime???… these are great fun to squidge, wobble, and bounce off bathroom walls (without resulting in a particularly difficult clean up). Their ‘deep sleep’ bath jelly has a scent that helps little ones calm down before bed… great for those evenings when your little one seems to be buzzing with endless energy!
5. Kate Broughton Temporary Tattoos (£5.50)
Temporary tattoos are always a great option for kids. Kate Broughton has a beautiful selection available in a range of categories: animals, birds, plants and bees! All the tattoo’s are non-toxic, skin friendly and FDA approved. The packaging is also environmentally conscious. Double win. For a cheaper alternative, you can also pick up these cheeky monster finger tattoos at thelittlethings.com for only £1.79!
6. Cake Craft World Cookie/Sandwich cutters (£7.20)
A great treat for a little baker or sandwich connoisseur. The quirky shapes of these cutters (and endless possibilities of what they can create) should keep your little one entertained in the kitchen for months to come…
7. Snazaroo face paint sticks (£4.99)
These face paint sticks are easy to apply, the perfect size for stockings, and are hypoallergenic and formulated specifically with sensitive skin in mind. You can buy them individually (or in a pack) and they last forever. On the website they have a number of themed colour packs, including (but not limited to) fantasy, adventure & jungle packs!
8. Ailefo Modelling clay (small tube) (£18.95)
Basically a non-toxic, less smelly version of play dough… this stuff isn’t cheap, but it’s pretty great. It’s the only modelling clay available on the European market made from food grade ingredients (with added plant oils), so you don’t need to worry if you’ve got young kids that try to eat everything they touch… apparently it tastes disgusting though.
9. Grow your own Cucamelons Kit (£8)
The perfect gift for a curious little gardener. Is it a melon? Is it a cucumber? What exactly am I looking at? Let’s find out…
10. Wild Thing Toys Reversible Crown, Loubilou (£14.99)
Fit for any little king or queen! This adorable crown was inspired by the children’s book where the wild things are, and can be reversed to be either gold or blue. A fun addition to any dress up box.
11. Metal Pocket Compass by Carousel (Amazon) (£4.63)
Perfect for little adventurers and pioneers. Lasts forever and doesn’t cost the earth.
12. Apples to Pears (Amazon) Miniature Flower Press in a Tin (£11.99)
This little press is the perfect size for a (large) sized Christmas stocking and can be used to bring some magic from your garden indoors.
